What Piero Hincapie will now do after being named in Erik ten Hag’s squad ahead of Arsenal move

Andrea Berta is closing in on his eighth signing of the summer at Arsenal before deadline day arrives.

The summer transfer window is nearing its close, with less than 48 hours until the deadline.

Arsenal fans have been wowed by Berta’s work over his first summer as the Gunners’ sporting director, but the Italian isn’t done just yet.

Exits are set to happen, as is one more arrival, with Arsenal agreeing terms to sign Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen.

Piero Hincapie set for Arsenal medical

The transfer is a real boost for Arsenal, who are set to bid farewell to Jakub Kiwior, who will join FC Porto on an initial loan.

The same deal is what the Gunners have struck with Leverkusen for Hincapie, who has a £45m buy option next summer.

There was some surprise over the weekend, despite the terms being wrapped up, as Erik ten Hag named the Ecuadorian in his matchday squad.

Fortunately, Hincapie was an unused substitute when Leverkusen drew 3-3 with Werder Bremen, and now, the centre-back is set to be released from his shackles.

Trusted Arsenal transfer insider, Hand of Arsenal, took to X on Sunday [31/08/25] morning to confirm the player’s plan to travel to London today to undergo a medical.

Berta has taken another transfer target from Tottenham, as Spurs wanted to sign Hincapie, but the player is on his way to N5.

What Erik ten Hag said about Hincapie’s transfer

The deal will bring great joy to Mikel Arteta, who is set to welcome another top-quality defender with positional versatility to his squad.

Arsenal have been tracking Hincapie for some time, with the appropriate time to swoop for the 23-year-old being this summer in reaction to Kiwior’s exit.

It’s positive for the Gunners, but heartbreaking for Leverkusen, as Ten Hag suggested prior to his side’s 3-3 draw.

“Letting good players leave always hurts. But we also have other good players, and they then need to take on that task,” Ten Hag told the media prior to Saturday’s fixture.

Berta has got another deal close to completion, as Arsenal are set to wrap the window up with their eighth capture.
