Ligue 1 winger is ‘one to watch’ at Arsenal as Andrea Berta waits on transfer green light

It’s all gone quiet on the transfer front for Arsenal after Andrea Berta welcomed six players to the club.

Mikel Arteta is already seeing the benefits of Berta’s work in the transfer window, as Arsenal’s squad depth has greatly improved

Though the focus is now on sales, it’s abundantly clear what the Gunners’ next move in the market should be.

Out of the six summer signings, only two are attackers, with another winger desperately needed before the window slams shut.

Malick Fofana is one to watch for Arsenal

Rodrygo could be available at a cut price, which might be food for thought for Berta

It’s clear that a left winger is needed, as Gabriel Martinelli is showing no sign of progression since his magnificent 2022/23 season.

The Brazilian needs a push to compete at a higher level, something that could happen as Arsenal have been credited with interest in Olympique Lyonnais winger Malick Fofana.

That’s the understanding of journalist Ben Jacobs, who told talkSPORT about some names doing the rounds at Arsenal.

“Anthony Gordon is definitely a player they like. I think the feeling in the industry is Newcastle are going to shut the door this late in the window.

“Malick Fofana could be another one to watch as well. Still hasn’t gone anywhere. Everton tried. They were quite close to agreeing a fee with Lyon, and yet the player wants to play Champions League football.”

Jacobs went on to share his opinion that Arsenal could be tempted by a player of Fofana’s profile towards the end of the window.

“So I think if a young left winger is available towards the end of the market and they can essentially get rid of Leandro Trossard who’s at the older end in terms of the squad age and bring in a young star for the future that can compete with Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke now and maybe replace them as a starter in the future.

“That kind of profile could be of appeal, but it all depends on an exit first.”

Jacobs reiterated that before thinking of signings, Berta needs to get the green light from the club to re-enter the buying market, as Arsenal need to offload some players to balance the books.

Maintaining a strong financial position is paramount to Arsenal’s board

It makes sense as to why Arsenal are so focused on sales, but with the end of the window in sight, the Gunners also need to consider who could be brought in.

Fofana is an interesting player to be linked to, as at just 20 years old, the forward has shown he can perform amongst the best.

Last season for Lyon, the Belgian contributed to 17 goals in all competitions, being one of the Europa League’s best performers with eight goal contributions in 10 appearances.

This season has started well for the youngster, who already has an assist in Ligue 1, coming on the opening day against RC Lens.

Given Lyon’s financial position and their need to generate funds, Arsenal could get a good deal for Fofana, who would certainly bolster Arteta’s options on the left side.
