Arsenal spoke about signing £52m player in ‘emergency’ meeting before getting Eberechi Eze

Arsenal’s summer transfer business has been utterly incredible to this point.

Indeed, the Gunners have addressed almost every area of the squad that needed addressing as the likes of Martin Zubimendi, Viktor Gyokeres, Cristhian Mosquera and Noni Madueke have all arrived.

Eberechi Eze has signed for Arsenal too in what is the icing on the cake of a fantastic summer.

Eberechi Eze joined Arsenal after Kai Havertz’s injury, and according to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, Arsenal considered another transfer option after Havertz went down injured.

Indeed, according to Romano, Arsenal spoke about signing Ademola Lookman in an emergency transfer meeting before ultimately deciding to go for Eze.

Arsenal discussed signing Ademola Lookman

According to Romano, Arsenal held an emergency transfer meeting after Kai Havertz picked up an injury, and during that meeting, the Gunners discussed the idea of signing Ademola Lookman from Atalanta.

Ultimately, Arsenal went for Eze, but, at one point, they did think about going for Lookman.

“Yeah, they had a meeting, an emergency meeting internally at Arsenal to decide what to do after the injury of Havertz. Maybe go for a number nine, maybe go for a number 10, maybe for a winger. One of the names under consideration, from what I’m hearing, was Ademola Lookman, Atalanta winger who was set to go to Inter then the deal collapsed and was under consideration at Arsenal as an opportunity on the market because the player is available,” Romano said.

Ademola Lookman compared to Eberechi Eze

Arsenal thought about going for Lookman instead of Eze, and that would have been an interesting move.

When you look at the stats last season, you would be forgiven for thinking that Lookman was the more decisive player of the two.

However, there is some important context here.

Lookman was playing in Serie A – a weaker league than the Premier League these days, so perhaps a fairer comparison would be to look at the two players’ stats in the English top flight.

Eze outshines Lookman when it comes to Premier League statistics, and, for that reason, it’s fair to say that Arsenal made the right decision here in going for the England star ahead of the Atalanta ace.

Lookman has been linked to Arsenal all summer, but now, a move for the £52m-rated ace looks unlikely.
